Ask any owner what their business does and they'll give you one sentence. We fix roofs. We do family law. We make custom cabinets. That sentence is the core competency. It's what customers pay for and why the business exists.
Now look at how the owner actually spends the week. A lot of it isn't in that sentence.
The support work piles up
Around every core business there's a layer of digital support work:
- Keeping the website current
- Posting to social and the Google Business Profile
- Updating the CRM and following up on leads
- Pulling numbers together to see how things are going
- Fixing whatever broke in one of the dozen tools you pay for
None of it is why customers hire you. All of it has to get done. In a small business, it usually lands on the owner or on one overloaded office person.
Why this matters more now
Every hour spent on support work is an hour not spent on the thing that brings in money. That trade-off was hard to escape when the support work needed a person. Hiring for it was expensive, and outsourcing it meant managing yet another vendor.
AI agents changed the math. Most digital support work happens in a browser, and agents can now work a browser. The work can be done without hiring, as long as someone directs it and checks it.
Draw the line
Here's a simple exercise. Write down everything you did last week. Then mark each item:
- Core: it's the thing customers pay for, or it needs you personally (selling, serving, deciding).
- Support, physical: it needs a person on site or on the phone.
- Support, digital: it happens in a browser or an app.
That last group is the list. That's what can go to agents.
Keep the core. Hand off the rest.
You should keep doing your core work. You're good at it, and it's why the business exists. The digital support layer is where managed agents come in. Bring that list to a free call and we'll sort out what agents can take today.
